With PN the entire image just pops with color accuracy, resolution and detail and that 3D look I crave from the Fuji product. What I'm finding in MY personal usage of that camera and those lenses are that not only are the colors more true in PN but the micro contrast and detail is just crazy good, where as with Lightroom (at the moment which hasn't been updated yet) it's just "ok". I'm using the 18-55 as well as the venerable 23mm f1.4 and 55-200. I've loved Lightroom for some time and used it exclusively.UNTIL I recently picked up my first Fuji, a X-T1. This could well be a case of how one works with a given software. I guess there's just no "Magic Bullet" - yet! And it's ugly! (BUT, PN reveals a bit more detail in the fine metalwork.) In comparison, LR shadows revealed more DR and were noise-FREE, even with ALL NR turned OFF! You can't see the noise very well in this screen capture, but it's there. The built-in Noise Ninja couldn't even make a dent in the big chunky noise that PN was displaying in the shadows. This was with very mild exposure settings. In another image, I was enjoying all the extra micro detail that PN was pulling out, until I saw what a mess it was making in the shadow areas. If I adjust the PN HR until the lights turn back to white, then the overall highlight recovery is really no better than LR at -90. The highlight recovery engine is "automatic", but can also be adjusted manually. I was blown away by the amount of highlight recovery PN pulled out of one difficult image, until I noticed that it had also turned very white security lights into yellow slabs. Images are near defaults for everything, including sharpening, with little exposure adjustments to equalize them. I realize this is a pre-release version, so this may be fixed by the time it is released, but here's what I've found:Īs before, PN 1.2.3 on the LEFT, LR 5.3 on the RIGHT. I've been opening and playing with a bunch of RAF files in LR and PN, and I'm finding a few interesting issues with PN. Little details like the bright green suspenders and white gloves have more detail and color in the PN file. ALL the detail is there, but it is gone in the LR image. Highlight recovery on the guy's helmet is amazing. Full detail in the highlights with PN, but just a white "blob" in LR! Also, look at the "halos" around the truss work in the LR image. (Left) Look at the bent silver exhaust vent cap. Highlight recovery is NOTICEABLY better in PN 1.2.3. (Left image) LR sky (on the right) is very Cyan in comparison.ġ00% crop of above. The color of the sky in the PN file is EXACTLY what it looked like in real life. I adjusted both to be a close as possible to equal settings. Same RAF taken with an X-E2 and 55-200 at 200mm. Note: one other weird thing I noticed is that PN seems to display more of the image! The LR image is slightly cropped even though I did NOT crop it! Strange. Therefore, I will continue to use LR for day-to-day developing and cataloging, but I think I may be finally ready to buy PN for certain images that I'd like to get the most out of. So I am very close to being a "convert", but PN is so friggin' SLOW work with, continues with same unintuitive interface, and the library function is not as good as LR. Sharpening and detail is similar to LR (in a good way), but PN seems to handle high contrast edges better with less haloing. The highlight recovery is off the charts better than LR 5.3, and the color rendition is noticeably better. Today I made the "mistake" of downloading PN 1.2.3. Too difficult to "dial in".), and PN (definitely nice color rendition out of the box, but otherwise slow and unintuitive interface and not enough of an overall IQ difference to switch). I've been more than happy with Lightroom and continually tried and abandoned other programs like C1 (good results, but way too difficult to use), Iridient (files initially look great, but on closer inspection they get "crunchy" and digital looking. I've been a staunch and vocal supporter of LR, even before 5.3 really brought Adobe's game up to speed (particularly with the X-E2 and X-100S files).
